Following Thursday’s floods, water levels in streams and rivers across Luxembourg are gradually receding.
In Ettelbruck, the Alzette’s water level stood at 1.90 metres on Friday morning, still slightly above the pre-alert threshold but has gone down by half a metre since Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the Sûre in Bollendorf has also been receding, after peaking at nearly 4 metres at 5.30pm on Thursday–four times its usual level.
On Thursday, the alert level was exceeded in four locations across Luxembourg. To provide context, exceeding a “pre-alert” level triggers an orange weather warning, indicating minor flooding that may cause limited damage or lead to road closures. If the water level crosses the “alert level,” the warning is upgraded to a red alert, signalling more significant flooding with the potential to affect houses and other areas, such as car parks.
According to national weather service MeteoLux, an orange alert will remain in place until 2pm on Friday due to a continued, albeit slight, risk of flooding. Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid activities near bodies of water until the situation stabilises.
