In the 2017 local elections, Reding received more votes than Cécile Hemmen of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP), but did not secure a majority on the municipal council. However, when Hemmen stepped down in 2018, Reding took over the mayoral position.
In 2023, no municipal elections were held in Weiler-la-Tour, as exactly nine candidates stood for the nine available council seats. Not long afterwards, the municipality suffered a tragedy when alderman and Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) member Bob Wagner died in a motorcycle accident.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Reding said it was time for him to pursue new professional and family goals. While he reflected on many fond memories and positive moments from his time in office, he also alluded to personal hardships that have left a lasting impact.
It is not yet known who will succeed him as mayor. The current aldermen in Weiler-la-Tour are Maurice Groben and Jean Feipel. In response to an RTL inquiry, Reding confirmed that he will continue to fulfil his duties in an interim capacity over the summer until a successor is appointed, likely during a council meeting in September. He will also remain a member of the municipal council as a councillor.
