By now it has become clear for many countries and governments that it is very difficult to balance the protection of vulnerable patients and the freedom of health care workers. Non-profit organisation "Respekt.lu", which is committed to the fight against radicalisation, argues that a mandate could have consequences for the entire society.
Karin Weyer, psychologist at Respekt.lu, explained: "Increasing polarisation is the biggest threat in my opinion, as we are starting to talk about 'us vaccinated' against those who are not. Being vaccinated is used as an identity of sorts, which may in fact increase the resistance from those who are already sceptical."
The psychologist thus warns from excluding people and creating a feeling of persecution, which may eventually play into the hands of extremists. Conspiracy theories are often used for that purpose, and even conflated to make the narrative fit if need be, Weyer emphasised.
Before a vaccine mandate can be introduced, all other viable options have to be seriously considered, the psychologist further highlighted.
