Cooling off in 30°CUpper Sûre Lake proves popular over sunny long weekend

Warm weather drew crowds to the Upper Sûre Lake over the long weekend, filling car parks and bringing a busy start to the bathing season.

Alongside barbecues and sunbathing, kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding are among the most popular activities for those looking to cool off. But it was not only busy along the water: campsites and youth hostels around the lake also saw plenty of visitors.

Holiday feeling close to home

According to the Water Management Agency's website, the lake currently has excellent water quality, making it the perfect place to cool down. Accordingly, large numbers of people headed to the lake over the weekend in search of a holiday feeling. So many, in fact, that the car parks in Insenborn, Bavigne, and Lultzhausen were quickly marked as full on Sunday.

For visitors, however, the lake is not only a place to cool off, but also an opportunity to briefly escape everyday life and feel as though they are on holiday.

One visitor said it really felt like a holiday, adding that when the weather is nice, the sun is strong, and it feels like a small holiday in Luxembourg, just a few minutes from home.

Others said they had come because the weather was so good and they wanted to enjoy it together, especially during the school holidays. Another group explained that they had seen good weather forecast for the whole week, so they decided to come by, organise a small picnic, and later go for a swim.

One child summed up the plan simply: play, eat, and then play some more.

Watersports and weekend crowds

While some prefer to enjoy the summer atmosphere at a relaxed pace, others use the lake for sporting activities on the water.

One visitor said they enjoyed kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, adding that anything that helps them cool off is welcome. Another explained that they come to the lake whenever the weather is good, especially to play with their son and have little water battles with friends.

Luxembourg's official bathing season runs from 1 May to 30 September. The youth hostel in Lultzhausen has already recorded more than 2,000 overnight stays this year, almost a quarter of the total recorded over the whole of last year, even though the season has only just begun. This month alone, the number has already reached around 1,000.

Busy start to the season

Last weekend in particular was especially busy in Lultzhausen, as Dylan Da Silva, manager of the youth hostel, explained. He said the start of the season is always when things begin to get stressful.

Da Silva stated that the first few days had been demanding, with three car parks completely full. This meant a busy period for the hostel team, with many drinks being served, supplies selling out, and staff having to go shopping again to restock, he explained.

The youth hostel mainly works with students. However, as many universities do not have a Whitsun break, there is currently a shortage of staff, meaning that watersport activities had to be cancelled in recent days.

Most visitors to the lake come from Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and neighbouring countries, but this year Lultzhausen has also already welcomed around a dozen visitors from Brazil and the US.
