Weather patternsUnusually cold April with excessive rainfall in 2023

Pitt Wagner
Last month saw 21% more rainfall than the April average from 1991 to 2020.

The average temperature in April was just 8 degrees Celsius, or 1.6 degrees colder than the usual monthly average. The coldest April on record, however, was 1986, where the average temperature was 5.1 degrees.

In 2023, the coldest day was 4 April, where records show the thermometer dropped to -3.3 degrees in Findel. There were no fewer than four days with frost. The warmest day last month was 28 April, with highs of 19.2 degrees - a far cry from the hottest day on record back in 2018, where temperatures hit 27.9 degrees.

It also rained more than usual last month, with an average of 60 millimetres of rain per day. Although the wettest April on record in Luxembourg occurred in 1898, with 175.5 millimetres of rain per day, last month certainly felt wetter than usual. At least 1 millimetre of rain fell on a total of 12 days, which is 3 millimetres more than normal.

Feel like you’re low on vitamin D? There’s a reason for that! The Pescatore weather station counted just 181.1 hours of sunshine last month, compared to the April average of 196 hours.

Overall, April 2023 was unusually cold, say meteorologists, whereas in recent years we have experienced the opposite. In contrast, areas in southern Europe saw heatwaves with record temperatures, such as in Spain, in the last couple of weeks.
