President Mil Lorang emphasised the significance of remembering the Shoah, the systematic genocide of Jews during World War II. Lorang stressed the relevance of this remembrance, particularly in the current environment where instances of anti-Semitism are resurging.
Acknowledging the growing threats against Jews in Luxembourg, Lorang cited concerning statistics obtained from the president of RIAL (Research and Information on Anti-Semitism in Luxembourg): “I asked the president of RIAL about the situation, and he informed me that there have been more incidents in one month than in the previous nine months.”
The majority of these incidents involve verbal abuse, primarily on social media. However, there have also been one or two direct threats. For instance, messages along the lines of “we know where to find you” were left on the websites of organisations addressing related issues. In addition, a Jewish family found a key ring on their door with the outline of Palestine and the words “Palestine, so no more room for Israel,” according to Lorang.
Six police officers were present at the inauguration of the plaques. According to Lorang, there are growing concerns surrounding the security of the Jewish community, pointing out that the recent call for violence against Jews by Hamas on 12 October specifically targeted Jews worldwide, not just Israelis.
