Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government is looking to introduce new criminal penalties for people engaging in street protests. The new security bill, which is awaiting senate approval, could issue jail terms and fines to protesters, and in particular targets climate demonstrators and migrants.
Luxembourg’s trade unions, the OGBL and LCGB, said the bill was especially concerning because of its targeting of migrants, and the law could even see pregnant women or mothers of young children placed in prison for up to a year.
The bill could also abolish offences conducted by public administrations, which can often be linked to corruption.
The OGBL and LCGB have called upon the Luxembourgish government to establish a position regarding the Italian bill, in support of their Italian colleagues.
