Unsurprisingly, the German brands still have the tailwind, but a small French car plays the spoilsport and asserts itself as the car most bought by Luxembourgers.
In 2022, the top 10 best-selling cars in Luxembourg include five German cars ... and some balance between compact models and SUVs.
After a convincing year in 2021, the small Peugeot 208 has shot its powder, pushing the Volkswagen Golf out of first place. The timeless German remains a safe value in Luxembourg, but is overtaken by another “historic” car: the Fiat 500. More than 1,000 of each of these three cars were sold in 2022.
Fourth place again goes to a German compact car: the Opel Corsa. It is an all-rounder and is ahead of the Peugeot 308, whose new version has been on the market since 2021.
Two large cars are again represented in the Top 5: the Tiguan and T-Roc SUVs from Volkswagen. The favourite brand of the Luxembourgers, which alone accounts for 14% of the vehicle population, has a total of three models in the Top 10, easily ahead of the Opel Mokka, also an SUV. Two other models close out the top 10: Volvo’s XC60 and Peugeot’s 2008.
Even though the 208 is the best-selling car in Luxembourg in 2022, German brands continue to dominate the market. First and foremost Volkswagen, which accounts for 11.8% of sales this year. That’s more than the last three of the top 10 combined!
In second place is Mercedes, which continues to be a mainstay of the fleet. The manufacturer sold over 4,000 cars in Luxembourg last year. Audi and BMW achieve similar performances and complete the top German quartet.
Peugeot, which is already in a good position in 2021, performs well and, along with Audi, is one of the few manufacturers to increase its sales year-on-year.
Continuing with Skoda, which is still the 6th most popular brand.... even without placing any of its models in the top 15 best-selling cars in 2022. This means that the brand can rely on a broad and solid range rather than a top model.
Opel is in 7th place, thanks mainly to the small Corsa and the voluminous Mokka, the German manufacturer returns to the top 10, just ahead of giant Renault. The Frenchman is close behind - with only two fewer vehicles sold.
Fiat takes ninth place, thanks mainly to its famous 500, which accounts for over 70% of the models sold by the Italians in Luxembourg. Finally, Hyundai closes the top 10 best-selling brands as it did in 2021.
