The US Ambassador to Luxembourg, Randolph Evans, stated that the long time it took for some US states to publish their results was a sign of a healthy democratic process.
As the gap between the two candidates became more and more narrow, Evans explained, election officials realised that "every single vote could be the difference". Thus, it was only natural and right that they proceeded very carefully and made sure that the final results would be accurate.
Evans stressed that a cautious approach was of the utmost importance, stating that "the office is so important that you can't be too careful in making sure that in a democratic republic the will of the voters is reflected in the selection of the person to occupy the Oval Office".
The Ambassador added that "if you wait until you know the result and then you go back and say you did it the wrong way, it looks like you're just unhappy with the outcome". Instead, Evans explained, it was much better to deal with any and all concerns about the voting process straight away.
