Around 70 people, mostly children, were placed in isolation for several hours in Rosport on Monday evening after bags containing a suspicious substance were found on a bus.

It is unclear what exactly was in the bags, and how they ended up on the bus. Around half a dozen children are thought to have come in contact with the substance.

Stéphanie Weydert, Mayor of Rosport-Mompach, confirmed on Tuesday morning that the substance was found to be “not dangerous”, which means that the children were safe for the duration of the incident. Although police were still unable to provide insights on the nature of the substance, an investigation has been launched.

Emergency services placed the children in isolation for several hours until more was known about the substance, but around 8.30pm the first children were allowed to go home. A few hours later the others followed. Speaking to RTL, a father of one of the children said they had to wait for three hours in total.

The CGDIS was present with no less than 50 firefighters, as well as a specialised decontamination intervention group, first responders and two ambulances.
