False alarmSuspected tornado above Luxembourg City was harmless funnel cloud, Meteolux confirms

RTL Today
Wednesday morning's unusual cloud formation above Luxembourg City, initially feared to be a tornado, has been officially classified as a short-lived funnel cloud with no ground impact.

Meteolux has determined that a suspected tornado sighting in Luxembourg City on Wednesday morning was actually a harmless funnel cloud, captured by surveillance cameras at Fondation Pescatore.

After analysing photographic evidence and radar data, meteorologists confirmed the formation showed no rotational signature on Doppler radar around 11am – the time reported by RTL readers. Officials noted that true tornado development would have been unlikely given Wednesday’s atmospheric conditions.

The observed phenomenon was classified as a short-lived funnel cloud that, according to current information, never reached ground level and therefore did not meet the technical definition of a tornado.

Similar formations in the United States are often called “cold air funnels,” typically benign weather events that occasionally accompany light rain showers.
