For many months now, the closed interchange in Strassen has been costing drivers time and patience. The current works aim to improve living conditions in the area and improve traffic flow. The extensive road works have been a source of frustration to many.
Robert Biel, head of the DTN - Division des Travaux Neufs, explains: „The two bridges have been completely redone, first the one leading to Route d'Arlon, then the one on Rue du Kiem. The onramps have been revamped to increase the usable surface. There have been a number of anti-noise measures, like the iron sheeting you see, but also on the motorway itself. And, very importantly, in fact this was one of the main parts, the bus lane on the Arlon motorway, which will be improved with a smart traffic light system."
The Strassen exit is currently still closed, but weather permitting, the interchange could be reopened by the start of school.
What's certain is that the works took longer than planned.
„The Corona pandemic meant there was a break. Plus, with ongoing traffic it is hard to predict how long each phase will take. But it is important to point out that we did most of the works under traffic. Apart from the onramp and Rue due Kiem, all roads remained open, including route d'Arlon, where a lot of work was done."
The construction sector's holiday begins next week and works will resume after that.
