The newly-formed National Council of Justice is set to officially begin its work on Saturday - timed to coincide with the new constitution. Justice minister Sam Tanson oversaw the swearing-in of new president, Luxembourg’s state attorney general Martine Solovieff, on Friday.
Alain Thorn and Viviane Ecker were both named vice-presidents.
Six of the new council’s nine members are magistrates, including lawyer Valérie Dupong, who was selected by the bar, as well as Viviane Ecker and Jean-Jacques Rommes, who were both selected by the Chamber of Deputies.
Members’ mandates will last until June 2025.
The new council, which was created with the new constitution, will be tasked with appointing, sanctioning or even promoting judges. Until now, these tasks fell under the remit of the Ministry of Justice.
