In Luxembourg, the number of smokers is once again on the rise, especially among young people. 37% of residents between the age of 18 and 34 say they smoke more or less regularly. E-cigarettes have also increased in popularity, with numbers having close to doubled in recent years.

At the end of April, the state council thus decided to raise the price of cigarettes by €0.20 per pack in an effort to discourage people from smoking.

Tobacco consumption in global decline

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been observing World No Tobacco Day since 31 May 1987. According to the Organization, an estimated 12% of the Earth’s population are smokers. For people above the age of 15, the rate is close to 20%, says the WHO.

Although tobacco consumption is in global decline, some places are still experiencing increases in smoking. Particularly affected are China and Asian countries in general.

Tobacco is considered to be the number one trigger for avoidable illnesses. Every four seconds, a person dies due to smoking.
