The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is in contact with six Luxembourg nationals in Peru.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with these people, some of whom live in the country while others are there as tourists, and advises them on what they should do.

The Ministry was informed that tourists from Luxembourg were stranded at the Machu Picchu site near Cuzco. However, trains have since resumed service in the area.

Peru is currently experiencing serious political tensions following the impeachment and imprisonment of President Pedro Castillo a fortnight ago.

Dina Boluarte has since assumed the presidency. Boluarte has declared her intention to form a new government, which will be presented on Tuesday. Pedro Angulo, the incumbent Prime Minister, is also expected to be replaced.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn explained the situation of Luxembourg nationals in Peru in response to an urgent parliamentary question by MP Laurent Mosar from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV).

Following President Castillo’s removal from office, Peru proclaimed a state of emergency for 30 days. The demonstrations that followed have claimed the lives of around 20 people so far.

The demonstrators are calling for the dissolution of parliament and new elections.
