Ana Lopes murder trialSiblings of the accused criticise police work

RTL Today
The day after the defendant's parents testified, on Thursday his siblings took to the witness stand in the trial over the murder of Ana Lopes in January 2017.

The police kept insisting she give them a time when the accused got home on the night of the crime, the sister said. The brother testified that the investigator had distorted his statements about his relationship with his wife.

"I think everyone in this family is acting like idiots", the president of the court commented, before explaining there was an ongoing investigation for stalking against the brother.

The brother countered that the investigator's conduct was being minimised, to which the judge asked why he hadn't made a complaint at the IGP - the police investigative unit. "That's useless!", he replied.

The brother began his testimony by stating Ana took and dealt drugs and that her murderer was likely to be found in that scene.

The judged queried why the brother was so sure of that, as his family were the only ones to accuse Ana of dealing. The brother responded that it was what people were saying, which the judge described as a response "with no value".

At the beginning of the session, the sister of the accused took the stand and declared she had watched a film with her brother on the night of the murder.

Regarding the matter of when the brother came home, the judge said: "It is remarkable that the police insisted and both you and your mum gave the wrong time of 9.30pm, when at 10.48pm your brother was seen driving past Ana's café."

The sister further said that her brother who was being accused of the crime was not easy on her. He might be the jealous type, but he had also suffered from the relationship with Ana.

The trial continues today (Friday) with the deposition of the defendant.
