While some people spent the week seeking shade and relief from the heat, others headed to the shops in search of bargains.
The sales began on Wednesday, while Sunday opening and the annual Mersch braderie offered shoppers another opportunity to refresh their summer wardrobes and take advantage of reduced prices.
The Mersch braderie traditionally coincides with the first weekend of the summer sales. Entertainment was organised throughout the town, while stalls lining the streets offered jewellery, decorations, clothing, and surprise boxes.
One visitor said his family came to Mersch every year, both to browse the stalls and to support local businesses.
"We come down once a year and take a walk around Mersch", he said. "It is also a way of supporting the local shops."
The family had already bought glasses and a few items for the children, although they planned to continue looking for further bargains.
Another shopper admitted that he was more likely to search for discounted products online, highlighting one of the main challenges facing local retailers. Others, however, still prefer visiting shops in person, where they can see, handle, test, and try on products before buying them.
For retailers, particularly those in the fashion sector, the sales remain an important opportunity to clear older stock and raise funds for new collections.
Marc Herber, president of Luxembourg's Fashion Federation (FEMO), described the past season as difficult, with the recent heat further affecting business and the beginning of the sales period.
"There is still a great deal of stock available, including almost all sizes", he said. For shoppers, he added, this meant there was still plenty of choice at heavily reduced prices.
Air-conditioned shopping centres also appeared to benefit from the heatwave, offering visitors a cooler environment in which to shop. Many stores there also opened on Sunday.
One shopper said she and her family had decided to visit because they had a free afternoon and the indoor temperature was comfortable. Another said she regularly checked the sales for good promotions, particularly on summer clothing ahead of the holidays.
Many shops opened between 2pm and 6pm on Sunday. The summer sales period runs until 18 July.
