48 Visupol surveillance cameras are now operational in Differdange, making the city the latest municipality after Luxembourg City to introduce the police video monitoring system. The cameras were officially inaugurated on Friday at Parc Gerlache, with Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden and Differdange Mayor Guy Altmeisch in attendance.
The installation of the system took 14 months and cost approximately €1 million.
Local authorities hope the cameras will quickly improve safety in and around the park. In addition to their deterrent effect, the system provides high-quality images intended to assist police in identifying suspects.
Municipal officials stress, however, that video surveillance will not be the only security measure used in Differdange.
In the capital, around 300 Visupol cameras are already in operation, with further expansion planned, including in the Gare district.
