The pilot project foresees separate toilets for girls and boys, as well as gender-neutral facilities that can be used by all students, the Education Ministry confirms. Education Minister Claude Meisch had already clarified this point during a radio interview with RTL last Monday.

A heated debate emerged at the end of January after the Education Ministry presented the initiative to the relevant parliamentary committee. The initial presentation had created uncertainty over whether future secondary school buildings would include only unisex toilets or whether these would be offered in addition to traditional facilities for boys and girls.

Even coalition partner the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) were reportedly caught off guard by the announcement, with some openly voicing opposition to the idea of exclusively unisex toilets.
