"Biogas is the lone area of renewable energies where plants are punished if they underperform. The Grand Duchy is the only country that strictly upholds EU regulations, which results in our sector being treated like a government step-child. One plant after another has to close shop."
Representatives from the biogas sector recently made themselves heard with this line of criticism, which they put forward during an issue of RTL Journal. Minister for Energy Claude Turmes reacted and invited representatives to a meeting, which was brought forward from January.
Following the meeting, the biogas delegation remains sceptical, as sector representative Gast Welbes noted: "We only managed to get this meeting because the issue was brought into the public sphere. We had an opportunity to talk about our problems, but based on the responses we got, I do not think that optimism is in order."
Welbes also underlined that biogas is subject to different conditions than wind energy, a fact he believes politicians still need to understand. New regulations for the sector are up for vote in the Chamber early in the new year.
