The Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development commissioned the respective study. A little over 1,000 people participated and provided insight into their shopping habits. Almost everyone agreed that reusing goods is a great idea and that ways to do so should be encouraged.

The most-bought second-hand objects in Luxembourg are clothes, closely followed by furniture and household appliances, though most of these objects are sold online rather than in stores, according to survey participants. People mostly rely on social media platforms to exchange second-hand goods.

However, the survey also shows that very few people tend to have goods fixed. Though half of participants are aware of the Repair Café, only 4% have used its services. Similarly, the website fléckenaléinen.lu is only known to 10% of participants, while 3% have used visited the website.

Nine out of ten people have gifted something they no longer needed. Half of participants stated already having bought second-hand goods, while 5% of the population have never been in contact with anything second-hand.

Prices and environmental consciousness are listed as the main reasons for buying second-hand. Nevertheless, it is also the case that the majority of second-hand purchases are not planned and concern objects that buyers do not actually think they need.
