Public Awareness CampaignSafeguarding senior citizens from scams

RTL Today
Emphasising the increased vulnerability of the elderly to scams, Minister for Family Affairs Corinne Cahen, alongside police officials, held a press conference on Tuesday morning to relaunch a campaign addressing this issue.

The initiative, titled Léif Boma, léiwe Bopa, Loosst iech net beducksen (“Dear Grandma, Dear Grandpa, Don’t Let Yourself Be Ripped Off”), was initially introduced in 2019.

Luxembourg recorded 4,700 instances of scams in 2022, conducted through various means such as telephone, email, and doorstep encounters with the sole intention of defrauding individuals of their money or valuables. The police stressed the severity of the situation, highlighting cases where victims lost their entire life savings to these fraudulent schemes.

The updated campaign aims to maximise outreach, ensuring that senior citizens are well-informed about appropriate measures to take when faced with such attempts and how to respond if they become victims.
