Excess vaccinesRemaining vaccine doses first offered to present health care workers

RTL Today
Rumours have emerged that the Limpertsberg vaccination centre is troubled by people not showing up to appointments because they do not want the AstraZeneca vaccine to be administered.

On Wednesday afternoon, MP Sven Clement from the Pirate Party submitted an urgent parliamentary question about whether, at the end of the day, the vaccine doses remaining in open vials are discarded.

Minister of Health Paulette Lenert has now issued an official response to the enquiry, noting that the health care workers employed in the vaccination centre are the first to be offered the remaining doses. The offer is then extended to present staff members who are not part of the priority category, before external health care workers, such as ambulance drivers, are contacted.

If none of the above are in need of the vaccine, health officials begin contacting other potential candidates, who are not allowed to be related to any of the staff members working on the supply chain. Minister Lenert underlined that this strategy has been effective thus far and that they avoided wasting vaccine doses.
