Bettel discussed the turbulent political climate in Spain with Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish prime minister, in light of the government's budget being refused by parliament. As the country is primed for early elections, Bettel did concede it would be difficult to get a majority together, especially due to polling results. But he remained steadfast in inviting Sánchez to Luxembourg, which would apply to another Spanish prime minister if Sánchez fails to be elected, provided they are democratic.

It has been 15 years since a Luxembourgish prime minister has been invited to Madrid for bilateral talks. Sánchez did not meet the press on Thursday afternoon, which resulted in no questions being asked concerning the situation.

Shortly before the meeting, Bettel spoke about the tragic explosion that occurred in Waldhaff on Thursday morning. He expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and deplored that those who had dedicated their lives to the country had been injured and died.
