At a press conference on Friday, Education Minister Claude Meisch presented the new primary school curriculum. With the last revision dating back to 2011, an update was long overdue.

He underlined that in the past 15 years, school-related and societal realities have changed, which is why the time has now come to adapt learning objectives and competence frameworks in primary education to these developments.

The biggest new feature is the integration of seven cross-cutting topics into the current schedules of primary school pupils. These include topics such as sustainable development, media, and artificial intelligence, as well as economics, finance, and life decisions, with the aim of preparing pupils for the future. These will not be taught as separate subjects but will instead be integrated into existing subjects and activities.

Emphasising that these topics are not only essential for the development of young people, but of society as a whole Minister Meisch explained that “we simply cannot leave it to chance whether someone sees this at school or not”.

The new curriculum will then be launched via a digital platform: Plandetudes.lu is accessible both for private individuals, but above all for teaching staff from September 2026. It is intended to be an everyday aid for teachers, according to Luc Weis, Director of the Department for the Coordination of Educational and Technological Research and Innovation (SCRIPT).

The new curriculum will be introduced starting next school year in Cycles 1 and 2, with Cycles 3 and 4 following the year after. 16 information sessions will be organised across the country in the coming months.
