In light of reports and warnings from virologists about a new and fast-spreading Covid-19 variant, labelled BQ.1.1, MP Max Hengel from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) recently filed a parliamentary enquiry to learn more about the prospect of a new infection wave unfolding in Luxembourg in coming weeks.
In her response, Minister of Health Paulette Lenert confirmed that only Omicron variants are being recorded in Luxembourg at the moment. Authorities have been tracing the BQ1 sub-variant, including sub-sub-variant BQ.1.1, for seven weeks and it so far accounts for 242 cases, or 13% of infections.
Although this does not point to a faster spread of the virus, authorities expect that the new variant will still eventually become dominant.
