CyclingPreparations begin on new bike path near Kockelscheuer

Work is underway on a 2-kilometre bike path along Kockelscheuer, which will connect Luxembourg City to Roeser and the Luxite industrial park.

Earlier this week, heavy machinery was brought in to cut down trees and clear the path for the new stretch. Construction on the path, running alongside the road at Kockelscheuer, is set to begin in February.

In preparation for the project, trees and shrubs were cleared along a 250-metre stretch of the route, with a maximum width of 6 metres. The trees were removed in winter to prevent disturbances in the breeding season of birds. Furthermore, every big tree was checked for bats.

Environmental compensation measures are planned and will be implemented, says Maurice Bauer, Chief Alderman of the City of Luxembourg and responsible for environment: “We’ve adapted the route so that all major trees can remain. Near the ice rink we’ll build a bridge that crosses the biotope as to not interfere with nature as much as possible.”

The current bike path ends at the golf course at Kockelscheuer. The bike path will connect Luxembourg City to Roeser and the Luxite industrial park. Works will take around a year. Once completed, the stretch will connect to other pre-existing bike routes in the area, as well as provide better connection to the tram.

Bettina Ballmann of the Roeser municipality says that the bike path will facilitate accessibility and lead to more jobs at the industrial park, as well as bring more visitors to the ice rink and Nature House.
