Ministry of AgriculturePoultry to be confined over fears of avian flu in Europe

RTL Today
Following reported cases of avian flu in Germany and the Netherlands, the Ministry of Agriculture has issued preventative warnings to bird and poultry farmers, although no cases have been detected in Luxembourg at present.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development has confirmed in a statement that no cases of the H5N8 avian influenza virus have been detected in the Grand Duchy so far. However, as a preventative measure, bird or poultry owners should keep their animals confined inside and avoid any potential contact with wild animals.

Feeds should only take place indoors, while watering poultry with water from surface water reservoirs accessible to wild birds is prohibited. It is recommended that outside pens be covered with netting.

Any suspected cases must be reported to a veterinarian, while any imported creatures must be certified officially in the country of origin. This also applies to any animals purchased at a market.

The Veterinarian's Association confirmed there was no danger of humans consuming poultry or eggs.
