In recent weeks, Luxembourg police have received multiple reports of fraudsters impersonating police officers in order to deceive residents.

The scam typically starts with a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer. The caller tells the victim that there have been several recent burglaries in their neighbourhood, and that suspects have already been apprehended. According to the caller, the suspects were found with a list of potential future victims, including the person they are speaking to. The caller then claims that officers will be sent to the victim’s home to create an inventory and collect their valuables for safekeeping. Shortly after, a person arrives, presents a fake ID, and takes the valuables, which are then never seen again.

Police advise residents not to allow themselves to be pressured and to call 113 in case of doubt. They also stress that such behaviour does not reflect standard police procedure and that all police officers in Luxembourg speak Luxembourgish and can properly identify themselves.

Authorities are also calling on the public to inform and warn elderly relatives or neighbours about this type of scam, as they are often the main targets.
