The police attribute the increase to greater awareness and a quicker response by individuals who witness domestic disputes. Neighbours and friends are also more likely to report incidents, although not all situations necessitate an eviction.
Evictions are determined by the public prosecutor’s office, which, after assessing the situation, may remove the perpetrator from the home for at least 14 days. Returning during this period constitutes a criminal offence.
The vast majority of evictions (90%) involve men. In cases of mutual violence, the public prosecutor’s office decides on a case-by-case basis who should be removed. Evictions are issued when there is a danger to life or physical safety, often involving assault, battery, or death threats.
