According to the latest statistics published by the Grand Ducal Police, the number of bicycle thefts has steadily increased in recent years.

This tendency should come as no surprise, given that bikes have also risen in popularity in Luxembourg. Additionally, the material out of which they are produced has become much more valuable and advanced in recent years, including expensive built-in features, such as navigation systems or automatic lights.

Thieves have caught up to this trend and target expensive bikes systematically by now. Despite modern anti-theft systems, bikes often end up stolen. Authorities have thus released a new safety advisory to caution bike owners and help them secure their vehicles:

  • Establish an overview document containing the brand, model, serial number, as well as a picture of your bike
  • Secure your bike at all times by attaching it to a fixed object when stationed
  • Use a strong chain to secure your bike and make it as difficult as possible to cut through it
  • When possible, tie several bikes together
  • Avoid stationing your bike in a poorly visible area
  • When possible, leave your bike in a guarded parking area

The police also encourages people to register their valuable possessions in the My Safe app, where all pertinent information regarding an object can be safeguarded.
