Begging in the cityPolice minister's statement cannot be substantiated by facts

Last year, Léon Gloden claimed that there was evidence that large German limousines with Belgian license plates were dropping off beggars in the city.

Georges Engel, a member of the LSAP party, enquired about this claim in a parliamentary question. Engel referred to statements made by Gloden last December on the radio channel 100,7. According to Engel, Gloden stated in an interview that there was evidence suggesting human traffickers “come to the city with large German limousines with Belgian license plates.”

The Minister of Home Affairs and Police Minister Léon Gloden, as well as the Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue replied that they are currently unable to provide any statements, reports, or other forms of documentation that would present evidence regarding this statement and the use of such transport by organised beggars.

Since there are no official declarations, no investigative procedures or judicial actions can be initiated based on these claims.

Between 2020 and 2022, the judicial police conducted a substantial investigation to uncover cases of organised begging, threats, or thefts committed by minors. According to the CSV, the possibilities for investigating criminal activities in these cases have reached their limits.

Despite numerous efforts, including those at the European level, it has not been possible to identify the masterminds behind such operations.
