On Wednesday, Luxembourg police and customs officers carried out a joint operation at Mertert port, checking boats, containers, lorries and people on site.
They established there were no violations or irregularities at that time.
Since 2024, Luxembourg has participated in the European Ports Alliance, an initiative launched by the European Commission, to maintain security at ports and other logistics sites, and to combat organised crime.
Logistics platforms play an important role in European trade, but are also popular targets for criminal organisations, using the sites to move drugs and illegal wares from country to country. As criminals have a tendency to change their approach on a regular basis, it is important for the authorities to carry out regular checks. Individual agencies must also work closely with international counterparts to exchange information.
