“Artificial intelligence is a revolution that will fundamentally change our way of living and working in the years to come”, says Prime Minister Luc Frieden, who is currently at a two-day summit in Paris where around 100 leaders from different countries have convened at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the future of AI. The main focus of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit lies in the safeguarding of human oversight and making the most out of emerging opportunities.

PM Frieden believes that AI will play a significant role in advancing the healthcare sector, citing early detection of illnesses as an example of a more “sophisticated” type of patient support. He similarly drew attention to new possibilities in financial services and space exploration, two domains at the heart of Luxembourg’s economy, pledging to evaluate in which specific areas the Grand Duchy might turn into a European AI hub.

He also conveyed that he already met with several European start-up companies, listing Mistral AI and its ChatGPT-like tool, called Le Chat, as a particularly promising venture. Frieden said that he managed to “convince” the Mistral CEO of exploring expansion opportunities in Luxembourg.

Frieden further argued that AI requires a responsible and clearly defined framework based on international cooperation, which is why he expressed optimism over the presence of high-ranking leaders at the summit, including US Vice President JD Vance and the vice premier of China.

Nevertheless, Frieden warned that Europe still needs to show ambition and leadership despite the involvement of global superpowers: “We cannot let the Americans and Chinese alone decide how to proceed with AI.”

Although the Paris summit only represents a first step in a lengthy process, Frieden labelled the talks as “constructive”.
