The Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB) on Saturday re-elected Patrick Dury for another five-year term as president. 236 delegates convened in Dommeldange for the LCGB’s national congress to join the vote and extend Dury’s 14-year spell at the helm of the trade union and its more than 46,000 members.

The LCGB is “stronger than ever”, said Dury while warning his constituents that Luxembourg’s social model is “under attack”. He asserted that the prime minister’s current course of action will likely provoke a “frontal collision” with unions, calling on the LCGB to ready for action in the coming months.

Dury further announced joint efforts with the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) to raise awareness of pertinent issues among employees in the Grand Duchy. He thus cautioned that the national protest scheduled for 28 June might only be the starting point and that they are ready to go on a general strike “if necessary”.

Dury also lamented the fraught relationship with Prime Minister Luc Frieden, arguing that cooperation with Xavier Bettel was much better. Meanwhile, OGBL president Nora Back and her predecessor both watched Dury’s speech from the first row, a show of support from the competing trade union not seen in a very long time.
