Breaking taboos around deathPalliative care charity Omega 90 sees record increase in patients in 2024

RTL Today
In 2024, the palliative care organisation supported 4,771 people, as well as offering in-house respite to 128 patients at Haus Omega, the charity's hospice.

Among the patients were 1,022 children or teens and their parents. The charity says its greatest challenge is the fact that patients leave it too late – on average, their patients spend just 31 days in palliative care at their hospice.

Omega 90 also warns against what it calls futile “over-treatment” towards a patient’s life – this is when there is no chance of recovery, and false hopes of extending life are maintained. Such treatment is frequently counterproductive and prevents the patient from experiencing a peaceful passing. The organisation is determined to educate people, providing patients with clarity and support.

In 2024 (amid record numbers), the charity focused on raising awareness of some of the issues above, and their Omega mécht Schoul campaign and training courses helped to actively address some of the taboos that surround death. Around 80 volunteers helped to contribute to the campaign and boost the charity’s presence.
