On Thursday, Mayor of Luxembourg City Lydie Polfer had a meeting with Minister of Internal Security Henri Kox to demand that police be more rigorous in removing homeless people from doorways.

In a statement on Friday, a spokesperson from the Grand Ducal Police responded to the comments made by the mayor, explaining that Article 5bis of the Police Law guarantees residents access to public and private buildings.

If people obstruct access to doorways, thereby restricting the freedom of others, police officers will respond to all citizen reports or intervene while on patrol.

A law passed by the Chamber of Deputies this summer gave police the power to remove people from entrances and exits and call for other emergency services, such as healthcare providers.

Police do not have the power to force homeless people to use the available shelters, the spokesperson added, but can only inform them about the availability of shelters in their vicinity.
