The meeting focused on improving recruitment strategies and work opportunities for nurses to fight the general shortages in staff in Luxembourg. Present were Anil representatives, as well as officials from the ministries of health, state, and education.

Though the meeting was considered to be productive at the time, the official report, sent out by the government committee on Friday, has sparked renewed outrage in the sector.

The report lays out the progress of discussions, which started back in November 2020. It announces that on the one hand, a bachelor degree for nurses will be introduced in the Grand Duchy, but on the other, the BTS traineeship will be maintained as well.

Anil president Anne-Marie Hanff thus laments that government officials did not retain the fact that work prospects for a bachelor degree first needed to be worked out. She further notes that having two separate studies for the same profession risks causing more logistical issues than helping in the end.

Both Germany and Belgium have been working towards eliminating the BTS degree for nurses. Finland, which is known for the quality of its nursing staff, only works with bachelor studies. Anil therefore demands that Luxembourg begin with its own transition period.

The association does not yet fear a lack of new recruits in the field, but believes that better work opportunities will be the best possible incentive to fight potential shortages in the future.
