The police psychology service would continue to offer primary assistance for serious cases, said Kox in response to a parliamentary question by MP Léon Gloden.
The CSV MP made reference to a recent RTL report concerning the widow of a police officer who died in 2018 following a serious accident in a police chase. The widow said she had felt abandoned by the authorities in the wake of her husband's death, and deplored the lack of available support to families left behind.
Kox said there was no independent service within the police which was aimed at taking care of the bereaved family members in such incidents.
The psychological service offered by the police should be the first port of call for the families in such instances, added Kox. Family members could decide on a voluntary basis if they wished to make use of the support service. He clarified that there was no time limit to the availability of the psychological assistance.
