Despite the rise in new Covid-19 infections, the government will not yet bring about new measures, said Paulette Lenert at a briefing on Monday. The Chamber’s health commission is to meet on Wednesday to discuss details of the coronavirus strategy going forward.

Lenert said there was no reason to panic at the present time, but instead appealed to the public to continue employing the barrier gestures and to avoid unnecessary social contacts. The risk of infection has risen due to increased activities, colder temperatures and more people staying indoors.

The increase in cases has become noticeable in the Grand Duchy’s hospitals, as more and more patients have been hospitalised recently with coronavirus symptoms. Dr. Claude Schummer, general director of the Robert Schuman hospital group, said over the summer, in phase 0, patients with Covid had been restricted to the CHL in the capital. However, as the country enters phase 2, hospitals across the country have resumed the admission of patients with coronavirus. The hospital in Kirchberg currently has 8 Covid patients, with one in intensive care.

However, in contrast to the situation in the spring, other hospital treatments and services have not been paused, meaning patients with other illnesses can continue attend for treatment or operations.

At Kirchberg hospital, a crisis unit has been assembled for daily meetings to monitor the number of patients and available beds, as well as staff numbers, in anticipation of more coronavirus hospitalisations over the next fortnight. Staff in the healthcare sector will also be subjected to quarantine or isolation measures following contact with infected cases within their private or social spheres.
