Speed radarsNo driving points deducted over one-year period due to tech glitch

An IT glitch with speed radars has resulted in no drivers having points deducted between September 2022 and October 2023.

The issue went unnoticed for over a year and is said to affect nearly 11,000 cases.

During the transition between the end of September and the beginning of October 2023, an error occurred in an IT application that disrupted the flow of information between the tax warning system and the driver’s license system.

As a consequence, drivers who had been caught running red lights or exceeding speed limits and had paid a €145 warning tax did not see any point deductions from their driver’s licenses. This issue went unnoticed for over a year until an affected individual reported the anomaly in early October when she discovered that she hadn’t lost any points.

Around 10,998 cases were affected by this case of human error, according to Patrick Houtsch, director of the Centre des Technologies de l’Information de l’État.

This disruption affected all automatic radars in the country, both fixed and mobile. The problem has now been detected and rectified.

Communication with other protocols, such as those related to mobile phone use or driving under the influence of alcohol, continued to function correctly with the driver’s license points system.

Regarding the deduction of points after the glitch was fixed, the Ministry of Mobility clarified that points would only be deducted for cases completed with the police after 22 September 2023, as these incidents still fell within the legal timeframe.

Therefore, drivers who recently paid the €145 tax for their warnings should exercise caution, while all other individuals had the opportunity to retain their points.
