For years, local authorities have touted tentative plans to build an open-air swimming pool near the campsite in Kockelscheuer. As Luxembourg City’s population grows, so too does demand for swimming pools, with the existing facilities experiencing high visitor numbers through the year.
Now, these plans could become reality in the near future, with a proposal to redevelop a site for new leisure activities.
DP alderwoman Simone Beissel said plans for such a pool had been in the making for a long time, enforced by the former existence of an open-air swimming pool in the capital in the past, which had proved popular at the time.
“This was a huge highlight at the Cloche d’Or, we used to meet there in our youth. Then there is the private hotel pool in Dommeldange which is always popular. We’ve been planning this for some time, it is a big dream of mine personally to install a 50-metre basin because we don’t have one that size in the capital at the moment. But it all depends on how much land we can use for the development.”
The proposed pool in Kockelscheuer should be a prime destination for young and old alike. At the moment, the city’s administration is conducting research, taking inspiration from international structures, to help develop the future project. Mayor Lydie Polfer said the scope of the project would very much depend on the size of the plot.
“We want this to be a place where families can spend their time, rather than a sports centre.”
The location in Kockelscheuer, with the existing campsite, minigolf and tennis courts, could easily be transformed into a full-on leisure site, with easy access to the proposed pool. Polfer pointed out the close proximity to transport links such as the tram, as well as a new car park under construction in the area. Kockelscheuer also has the ice rink and numerous ponds which already attract a number of visitors.
“We really want to make this work,” Polfer added.
Although it is still unclear when and where the project could begin, due to a lack of available plots, it is thought the situation might be clarified over the coming months.
