Municipal electionsNew local governments take shape across Grand Duchy

On Monday, a number of municipalities across the Grand Duchy evaluated election results and decided which party or coalition of parties will take over the reins in their town.

Bettembourg Mayor Laurent Zeimet from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) won his reelection bid and will serve another six years as head of the municipality. The CSV has already initiated coalition talks with the Democratic Party (DP) and the Greens.

Marc Ries will be the new mayor of Betzdorf. A continuation of the coalition between the CSV and the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) is currently being planned.

Frisange will keep Roger Beissel as mayor. Following Sunday’s elections, the local citizens’ list will enter a coalition with the Democratic Party (DP).

The CSV-Greens coalition running Grevenmacher will stay in power. MP Leon Gloden will take on another term as mayor.

Hesperange will no longer be governed solely by the CSV as a coalition has been formed with the DP. MP and mayor Marc Lies will keep the local top job despite a 3% decline in votes for the conservative party.

Edy Mertains will stay mayor of Troisvierges. Only the composition of the local aldermen council will slightly change as Norbert Breuskin, who did not run for reelection, will be replaced by Carlo Schroeder.

In Wincrange, it looks as though Lucien Meyers will continue leading the CSV-DP coalition.

The situation in Wiltz seems much more unclear at the moment given that the LSAP lost votes and now has five seats on the local council, the same number as the CSV. However, the latter is said to already have met with the DP to discuss a potential coalition.

Incumbent Mayor Romain Wester will continue running the municipality of Parc Hosingen with Aldermen Gilles Thilgen and Georges Majerus at his side.

The future leadership of Clervaux is not yet clear as talks in the northern town are still ongoing. However, 35-year-old Georges Keipes, who headed the local citizens’ list, beat incumbent Mayor Emile Eicher from the CSV and now seems poised to take over the top job.

In Bech, Jill Goeres is poised to become Luxembourg’s youngest mayor, after the 20-year-old, who is still working towards a teaching degree, won more votes than her more experienced competitors in Sunday’s elections. Norbert Classen and Nathalie Wohlfart will serve as deputies in line with the results.

Thierry Lagoda will continue as mayor of Beckerich, following meetings with the new councillors on Monday evening.

No change at the top in Useldange, where Pollo Bodem will stay on after winning the individual vote.

Former alderman Henri Rasqué is set to take over as mayor in Ell.

In Steinsel, Fernand Marchetti will continue to serve as mayor, with the former LSAP-CSV coalition giving way to a new coalition between the LSAP and the DP after the latter achieved promising results on Sunday.
