During a press conference on Thursday morning, Minister of Sport Georges Mischo announced that Luxembourg’s new sports museum will be constructed in the ‘Rout Lëns’ neighbourhood of Esch-sur-Alzette.
The decision marks a shift from the original plan, which had designated Esch-Lankelz as the site.
The three-story museum will span 2,500 square metres and will be integrated into the historic turbine halls of the Rout Lëns industrial site. Renovation work is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with completion expected by the end of the first quarter of 2028. The museum is projected to open in early 2029, with a total project cost of €30 million.
Initially proposed in 2017, the museum was originally planned for Esch-Lankelz. However, the project was relocated after the land could not be reclassified for this purpose.
Once completed, the museum will showcase Luxembourg’s sporting history while also serving as a hub for discussions on both the past and future of sports in the country.
