Europol announced that Nesat Bego, convicted for sex offences against children in Luxembourg in January 2019, was arrested in Belgium on Thursday evening.
Bego was sentenced in absentia by the Criminal Chamber of the District Court of Luxembourg on 8 January 2019 to a term of 5 years imprisonment, after committing indecent assault with violence on a child in February 2016. The crime was committed in southern Luxembourg.
On 27 October, Europol launched a campaign titled "Some of Europe's most dangerous offenders under the spotlight", which drew attention to Bego on social media. The pressure was such that Bego was forced to contact Luxembourg's Fugitives Research Unit on 29 October. Following a series of negotiations, the fugitive agreed to leave Serbia on 12 November on a flight to Brussels, where he was subsequently apprehended by the federal police and the FAST special unit.
It is thought that Bego will now return to Luxembourg to carry out his sentence in Schrassig prison, following a European arrest warrant submitted to Belgian police by the Luxembourg prosecutor's office. The official statement gave thanks to the targeted search units' cooperation of the respective police (Fugitive Active Search Teams - FAST) in Luxembourg, Belgium and Serbia.
