In response to a parliamentary question by deputy André Bauler (DP), Minister of Home Affairs Léon Golden informed there are nearly 200 car thefts every year. In 2023, BMWs, Audis, Land-Rovers and Mercedes (in that order) were the most stolen. Mostly German cars, as opposed to previous years when French brands were mainly targeted.

In terms of the municipalities which report the most thefts, we have Luxembourg City, followed by Esch-sur-Alzette, Dudelange and Differdange. None of these are particularly surprising, as they are the most densely populated municipalities in the country.
The Minister revealed two further tables: the first highlights the number of attempted thefts versus the number of successful thefts, whilst the second details thefts of special vehicles.

Apart from the fall in number of thefts during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry did not register a significant change to the amount of car theft over the last four years. What he did note, however, is that the number of attempted thefts remains close to thirty every year.

Also in terms of special vehicle theft, which includes trailers, lorries, tractors, and so on, the Ministry notes regularity and consistency over the past four years - again, with exception of the Covid-19 period.
