From social welfare and culture to sport, health and heritage, the Oeuvre nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte redistributed last year's proceeds across hundreds of initiatives.

Playing the lottery can pay off not just for the winner, but for a host of other people too, namely the beneficiaries of the National Lottery.

Last year, €33 million from the National Lottery's proceeds were redistributed, funding around 250 projects across five areas, namely social welfare, culture, the environment, sport and health, and heritage and remembrance, with particular attention to the most vulnerable.

More than half of the funds, nearly €19 million, were allocated by the Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte to the National Solidarity Fund and to the country's 30 social welfare offices. The National Lottery funds the Oeuvre's philanthropic activities, and all its profits are donated to the Oeuvre to support projects that serve Luxembourg's public interest.

All in all, the National Lottery closed the year with gross revenue of around €100 million from various forms of lottery games.

Not every application can be approved, but of 375 received, 246 projects were given the green light by the public institution. Among those backed financially are Living Memory, wheelchair handball and the Ugegraff project.

For the past four years, Danièle Wagener has chaired the Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte. Simone Flammang serves as vice-president, with Emile Lutgen as director.
