Due to Russia’s war against Ukraine, the two Scandinavian nations decided to abandon their historic stance of neutrality and apply for membership in the military alliance.
58 out of 60 MPs approved two laws in favour of that membership. The two MPs from the Left Party (Déi Lénk) abstained, stating that while they can understand the security concerns of the two countries, their party retains a “generally critical stance” towards NATO. MP Nathalie Oberweis also heavily criticised the role of Turkey in the procedure.
Last week, the government spoke out in favour of a NATO membership and the Government Council passed a draft bill to that end.
