If CSV retains majority in PétangeMP Jean-Marie Halsdorf may not stand in Chamber elections

Jean-Marie Halsdorf has announced that he will not run for reelection in the Chamber elections if the Pétange section of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) retains a majority in the municipal elections.

The MP and municipal councillor recently voiced his determination to become mayor of Pétange and further said that he is unwilling to combine several mandates. At the same time, Halsforf refrained from speculating about what were to happen if the CSV were to lose its majority in Pétange.

During a roundtable talk on local radio station Péiteng on Air, Halsdorf announced: “I now make it official: I will not run in another [parliamentary] election, I will only focus on municipal politics.” The MP and councillor explained that he made this decision after incumbent Pétange mayor Pierre Mellina, also from the CSV, announced that he will not be seeking another term.

Halsdorf also reaffirmed this stance in conversation with Radio 100,7. He already held the office of Pétange mayor once before, but stepped down when he was appointed Minister for Defence. In the 2018 parliamentary elections, he entered the Chamber of Deputies with the five-most votes on the CSV south list.

The CSV Pétange is currently in a coalition with the local section of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP). Both parties hold twelve out of 17 seats.
