

Between 2012 and 2021, 2,729 people suffered severe injuries in accidents, 9,669 were lightly wounded, and 315 people died. With 47%, the percentage of severe injuries is particularly high for tree collisions, followed by motorcycle falls, and collisions with other firm obstacles.

The highest rates for severe accidents were recorded in the cantons of Redange, Wiltz, and Clervaux. Most accidents meanwhile happened in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette. More than half of all accidents occurred in Esch and Luxembourg City. The fewest took place in the canton of Vianden.

The majority of accidents happen in the months of June and July, the fewest in February.

When it comes to severe and fatal accidents, speed remains the number one cause with 27%. In 14% of cases, alcohol was responsible for the crash, same as pedestrian involvement. In 11% of cases, collisions occur because the right of way was not respected.

In 33% of fatal accidents, the person passing away was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Women are more prone to wear a seatbelt than men, 92% versus 84%.
